Cosmelan Peel Treatment

Cosmelan is a skin rejuvenation deep pigmentation treatment which uses chemical peels (skin resurfacing, skin exfoliation) to reduce the appearance of brown marks on the face. Due to sun damage, ageing or hormonal problems (pregnancy or birth control pills), some people have a darker complexion in some areas of their face and want this to be made even. Cosmelan is a treatment that is used to even out the colour of the skin on your face. There may be darker or lighter patches on your forehead, nose and cheeks, and Cosmelan helps to create a more even tone. It is not phototoxic.

How does Cosmelan work?

It is not phototoxic like many peel and laser peel. It uses Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) as an active ingredient in the chemical solution. This chemical peel is used to exfoliate the top layer of skin, thus eliminating blemishes such as pigmentation problems and sunspots.

Who are suitable for Cosmelan treatment?

Cosmelan treatment is suitable for both men and women who are looking to lighten their skin tone evenly while reducing signs of ageing on the face while dressing pigmentation issues. Cosmelan can be used to lighten dark patches on any area of your face including under-eye circles, cheeks, chin or forehead. The brown patches can be caused by many factors such as sun damage, hormonal changes due to a pregnancy or Hormone Replacement Therapy during menopause or use of contraceptive pills. 

How is Cosmelan performed?

The process of Cosmelan treatment combined chemical peeling (Chemical Exfoliation) with light source technology (Intense Pulsed Light, IPL). It takes approximately 60 minutes and there are no needles or pain involved in the process.

Before starting the treatment, numbing cream will be applied to your face to reduce any discomfort or pain that might be caused by the chemical peel. This cream should be used 30 minutes before treatment and it will help you relax during the procedure.

After this, the active solution (TCA) is applied to your skin using a brush to allow for even distribution of the solution. The top layer of your skin will be removed by the chemical peel, and this will be followed with an LED light on your face.

The combination of these two processes is capable of removing dead skin cells to reveal a fresh new layer of healthy skin underneath.

What is the recovery time after treatment

The procedure itself has no recovery time as it does not cause any pain or discomfort for you after treatment. Your Cosmelan procedure will be finished in 60 minutes and you will not need to take any medicines or vitamins after your treatment is done.

How long does the Cosmelan process take?

The procedure of application we will apply you will need to leave on for about an hour so it takes approximately 60 minutes, however 15 – 20 minutes are needed for preparation before the process begin to get your skin ready in the clinic to clean it and remove any debris. 

What results can I expect?

After you have left our clinic, your skin should lighten within 3 to 7 days after your treatment. The pigmentation level depends on several factors such as the amount of skin pigmentation you have and also previous sun exposure and age.

If the pigmentation is mild to moderate, then you are likely to see visible results within a week. However if there is heavy pigmentation or it was previously untreated by other methods, then your skin may take longer to recover.

The results of Cosmelan treatment vary from individual to individual, and the process will continue for up to 6 months or more after the initial procedure.

How does it compare to other procedures?

The depigmentation process by chemical peeling is commonly known as Cosmelan in comparison with laser depigmentation which is known as photorejuvenation. We will apply both to your peel first the chemical peel then the IPL laser.

Cosmelan vs Photorejuvenation 

Cosmelan and Photorejuvenation both are effective treatment options to treat different skin problems such as pigmentation, sun spots or dark patches on the skin.

The main difference between these two procedures is that Cosmelan uses chemical peeling to remove the upper layer of your skin for exfoliation, followed by intense pulsed light (IPL) to stimulate your skin cells for them to produce more melanin and help in skin regeneration.

On the other hand Photo rejuvenation used laser pulses to destroy the upper layer of your skin, thus revealing new layers underneath while also stimulating the production of new melanin. As a result, it leads to the production of darker melanin in the skin which lightens your skin tone.

Are there any medical side effects that I should be aware of?

Side effects will vary from person to person and depend on several factors such as age, health condition or sensitivity to certain medications. We will go over these at the consultation. As a result, you may experience some redness or peel for up to 10 days after your Cosmelan treatment, and this side effect is not harmful to you. There may also be swelling or itching for a few hours, however, it should subside after 24hrs.
